Do you rush out of the door each morning having already accomplished a full day of work? Up at dawn, working till dusk and then collapsing exhausted onto the sofa for some well-deserved ice cream or small to a large glass of wine muttering something along the lines of “I deserve this, I have survived the day” It is very easy to use unhealthy responses to stress. Chronic stress which is daily stress that builds up over a number of years will affect your immunity. Long term stress will also affect your weight. As you age you are no longer able to lose weight in the way you did before. In addition to this, the stress hormone cortisol also prevents you from losing weight. Long term stress affects your immunity and inhibits your ability to lose weight. This is why I have outlined some simple pleasures to reduce stress. This blog will illustrate how you can avoid an unhealthy response to stress and create a more beneficial longer-lasting response to stress.
How to create simple stress relievers
Stress creates a vicious circle, a repeating cycle that gets your jobs done but keeps your stress levels high. You may think that this has a short-term consequence on your health and well being but instead, it has a long-term effect.
Do you feel that you can make changes when any number of ‘things’ have happened for instance:
- when the kids leave school
- this project is finished
- you can afford a cleaner
- the cat leaves home!
- when you retire
Why the stress cycle is damaging your immunity
This cycle is hurting you more than you know, these stress patterns will become cemented into habits and last forever. Not only that the stress hormone, cortisol ages you faster. Stress also increases inflammation markers throughout your body. Increased inflammation increases the tissue damage to your skin and worse of all to your immune system. It isn’t just the obvious stress effects of too much coffee, hard work and little time off that causes stress.
Stress can affect you in so many other ways:
- you can stress your body by exercising too hard
- stress your mind by working too hard
- stress your immune system by not resting properly
- stress can also affect your nervous system – a constant feeling of fear or insecurity from pushing yourself too hard too fast.
If you are concerned that you are too stressed and it is having an adverse effect on your body as well as your immune system then check out my blog: Are you worried about your health & what your future holds? I talk a lot about this in my best-selling book, Gorgeous! If you want to make nutritional changes but feel overwhelmed and confused by conflicting information and you’re left bewildered where to start then pick up a copy of Gorgeous!
Introducing new habits to break the cycle will change your long-term health. Enjoy your day more and reap the benefits long term.
