In 3 months time: you going to be exactly where you are now!
Be honest, did you have a New Year’s resolution?
How about a summer holiday deadline? Have you let them both slide – or are you panicking that you haven’t left enough time and you are looking for a quick fix? A 6-week bikini diet?
HOLD ON A MOMENT ……… has this worked for you before? Are you going to be exactly where you are now in 3 or 6 months time?
Diets and resolutions are SHORT TERM and are often demoralising courses of action.
What about a different approach?
Start from the beginning and begin by changing the way you see yourself and the way you approach your health. Forging ahead with the next diet, might help you to get into the swimming pool more comfortably this summer, but have you considered that the diet may actually be DAMAGING your health? Damaging your health? That is a bold statement…….. yes, it is… diets change your metabolism and if you do that over and over again. What on earth are you doing to your body? your hormones? Is your health going to benefit from this in the long term?
Not only are diets based on dodgy science the nutritional advice is out of date. They are focused on cutting calories and that makes you feel exhausted, irritable and ‘ready to kill’ for the next few weeks. Nice prospect!
Take a fresh approach… be practical, be reasonable and consider your long-term health.
Start with accepting yourself right now…
Your health journey starts with where you are RIGHT NOW, warts and all. Be realistic about where you want to go and show yourself some self-love and approval for your positive and longer term choices. Make your journey about creating habits that incorporate self-care and self-education.
“The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” – Carl R. Rogers
If you know how you behave to certain triggers like stress or emotional upsets then you can do something to change your behaviour.
Marsha Firestone President of the Women’s Presidents’ Organisation explains that
“you can’t make adjustments in your behaviour if you aren’t first aware of what that behaviour is”. – Marsha Firestone President WPO
Knowing yourself is your first step, knowing why you want to change is your second step. Being committed and fully on board with your own decisions and behaviour will make the difference in your life that you have always wanted. Waiting for a diet plan to hand out the answers will only work as long as you stick rigidly to that plan. You have a choice of being on that ‘plan’ forever or jumping off and slowly you will go back to square one. It is inevitable.Your long term success depends on you and the permanent changes you make in your life.
Your long term success depends on you and the permanent changes you make in your life.
You know that … it isn’t rocket science… but I get it … it is scary. Taking the time to get to know yourself, treating yourself with love and knowing what to do can feel overwhelming.
Break it down, make small steps and take responsibility for the choices you make every day in small ways. Make your new course of action easier by using habits to embed healthy food choices and exercise options. Use a faithful and loyal support network and obtain help and understanding from your personal health coach.
Here are a few tried and tested tools to help you to shift your thinking and help you to achieve your dreams.
Consider what you know about yourself….

Are you a Starter or Finisher?
- Do you take great delight in opening a new toothpaste?
Or
- Do you take great delight in binning the old toothpaste?
Are you a finisher or a starter? Once you know that about yourself you can understand your own pitfalls, increase your awareness and guide yourself through them.
Finishers take a long term to mull things over, decide and re-decide and put things off … but once they have made a decision WHAM! A finisher is going to work well because by hook or by crook they are going to find a way to complete what they have started. So a finisher would put their name down for an event like a ‘cancer run’ or a ‘charity bike ride’. It doesn’t matter if it takes 3 hours or 30mins they will do it because they are finishers. Are you a finisher?
Starters are very very keen to start new things, yippee, they are easy to motivate and happy to get going. The downfall is whether they get to the end…. that is when a support group and personal health coach helps. To keep you motivated to the end, using all sorts of tricks and tools to keep you going and complete what you have started. Are you a starter?
You can adapt your habits and formulate a successful completion strategy if you know how you operate.
Knowing yourself and how you operate is a great starting point then you can apply the second step which is knowing your why – knowing your own personal motivation.
What’s really brought you to this point?
Consider your past food experiences –as just that, learning experiences. You don’t want past performance to influence how you think you’re going to behave now. Working with me, you can work through and remove the past hang-ups and find out where you want to go. A forward-thinking approach to your health, that recognises your past behaviour then applies tools to avoid past mistakes in the future. A positive approach that looks forward to your healthy future, something you can ‘hang on to, something tangible’ that will drive you forward. A reason or someone that MEANS a lot to your PERSONALLY will motivate you and ensure your success.
Discover WHY you want to move forward.
When striving to achieve a goal you need to know the reason behind your objective. That’s because ‘your why’ holds the secret to your motivation and commitment – to help you through those inevitable tough days.
Know your why… know where you want to go
Your journey of self-discovery and self-knowledge starts with WHY. You want to dig deep and KNOW WHY you are on the journey. What do you hope to achieve? What is your aim? The more time you invest in considering ‘why’ and considering where you want to be in 3 or 6 months, the more your amazing brain will figure out a way how to get you there.
Look at yourself with love and respect, see if you can get a sense as to the real cause of your unhealthy lifestyle.
You don’t want to kid yourself with a superficial answer such as, “I don’t exercise enough” or “I eat too much chocolate”. Dig deep so you can understand the real reason that your body has become your ‘forever problem’ and sense of dissatisfaction with your life.
Develop a sense of your own strength.
Take great joy in the power that you have, in your own life to fulfil your dreams…
